About Us
- What is Cornerstone?
Cornerstone is located at 640 N. 16th St., an A-frame building south of Vine and north of Neihardt. Cornerstone is a safe, inclusive place to grow and serve, anchored in the hope and joy found in belonging to Christ.
Come and just hang out to get away from the dorm or homework. Cornerstone is open day and night and is a great place for good conversation, studying, sleep, playing games, watching TV, playing piano, or just chilling.
- Cornerstone History
In Lincoln, the 1970's was a decade of development. Given the long history of separate and somewhat differing styles of work in campus ministry, it was not at all surprising that the process of development was not quickly nor easily accomplished. In 1976, the decision was made to cease having Sunday morning services at Commonplace, and to jointly promote the services at Wesley House as the UMHE worshipping community. Larry Doerr became, for the first time, a fairly regular preacher at Wesley House services. Between 1978 and 1980, a new operational structure with a single Ministry Council was developed. This more unified structure would prove very helpful in making some of the tough decisions to come.
In 1984, the Council decided that they needed to sell one of the two buildings UMHE currently had, Commonplace or the Wesley House. After weighing the pros and cons, the Council felt that it would be better to sell Commonplace and keep the Wesley House with its new organ for UMHE. Commonplace went on to become an extension of the Nebraska Union, and the majority of its space was dedicated to minority cultural ethnic groups at UNL that were in great need of program and office facilities. The Wesley House became what we now know as Cornerstone, a place where Christians of several denominations can worship and work together as part of an inclusive and loving spiritual community.
